It provides a common language and criteria for the diagnosis of mental disorders.

The DSM-5 specifies three subtypes of ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. The subtype is based on the predominant symptoms that a person exhibits.

Inattentive Symptoms

Inattentive symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are characterized by difficulty maintaining focus and paying attention to tasks or activities. People with the inattentive subtype of ADHD may have difficulty organizing and completing tasks, following instructions, and staying focused on lectures, conversations, or other activities. They may also be forgetful, lose things easily, and have trouble staying organized.

Hyperactive Symptoms

Hyperactive symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are characterized by excessive levels of restlessness, impulsivity, and difficulty sitting still. People with the hyperactive-impulsive subtype of ADHD may fidget, squirm, or tap their hands or feet when seated, and may have difficulty remaining seated for long periods of time. They may also act impulsively, blurting out answers or interrupting others, and may have difficulty waiting their turn.

Impulsive Symptoms

Impulsive symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are characterized by a lack of planning and impulse control. People with the hyperactive-impulsive subtype of ADHD may act on impulses without considering the potential consequences of their actions. They may also have difficulty waiting their turn, blurting out answers or interruptions, and may act impulsively in social situations.

The DSM-5 specifies several criteria that must be met in order to diagnose ADHD in children. These include:

  1. Developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that are consistently present over a period of at least 6 months.
  2. These symptoms must be present in multiple settings (e.g., home, school, work) and interfere with functioning or development.
  3. The symptoms cannot be better explained by another mental disorder or medical condition.
Scoring Instruction

To meet DSM-V criteria for ADHD in childhood, a child must have at least 6 responses of “Often” or “Very Often” (scored 2 or 3) to either the 9 inattentive items (1-9) or the 9 hyperactive-impulsive items (10-18), or both. For older adolescents and adults (age 17 and older), at least five symptoms are required.
